Some ghost stories begin in abandoned mansions or forgotten graveyards.

This one began while I was getting ice cream.

When I was in high school, my sister and I were up late together one night. I went into the kitchen and started digging through the freezer. Near the kitchen was a small room with an old floor hatch leading down into an unfinished, dirt-floor basement.

While I was looking through the freezer, movement caught the corner of my eye.

The basement hatch was opening.

It lifted only far enough for something to come through. By the time I turned and looked directly at it, I saw a pale, hairless, impossibly thin figure moving on all fours. Its arms were long, its hind legs bent strangely beneath a raised back end, and its small dark eyes sat in a face I can still remember nearly three decades later.

I screamed.

My sister saw it too.

Whatever we saw ran across the basement area and disappeared into the laundry room.

We did not follow it.

To this day, I don't know what we saw that night, and I'm not going to give it a name simply because nothing I've found has ever completely matched what I remember.

Leather & Labdanum gives the candle a dark, atmospheric character suited to old wood, shadowed rooms, and things better left beneath the floorboards.

The antique-inspired label deliberately doesn't show what came through the hatch. Instead, an open refrigerator casts its ordinary light across the kitchen while the basement entrance sits open nearby, revealing nothing but darkness.

Sometimes what you can't see is the part you remember longest.

Candle Care

Trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch before each burn. For the first burn, allow the melted wax to reach the edges of the vessel to encourage an even burn and help prevent tunneling. Keep the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts and flammable materials. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep away from children and pets.

I don't know what came out of that basement.

I only know that the door moved first.
